Klezmer at PAAM

Bart Weisman and Others Begin a Winter Jazz Series

By Kahrin Deines

You don’t have to go to a traditional Jewish wedding, or pick up one of John Zorn’s wilder jazz albums, to hear some klezmer this December.

The December 16 performance will start off a Winter Jazz Series at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.

Master drummer Bart Weisman, a Provincetown musician and founder of the annual Provincetown Jazz Festival, is leading a musical group in a performance of traditional klezmer and swing era music at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum on December 16 at 2 p.m.

The group is primarily composed of Cape Cod musicians, with the exception of Daniel Rozas, a Lithuanian and D.C. resident who will contribute to the evening’s music on the clarinet and saxophone. Ted Jellinek, a Sandwich resident, will work the accordion and piano; Denya Levine, who is a world music fiddler from Orleans, will play the violin; Eastham resident Michael Ryle will perform on bass; and Brewster-based vocalist Carol Wyeth and Mr. Weisman will join in on their usual instruments.

The December 16 performance will start off a Winter Jazz Series at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Bart Weisman hosts the Jazz Series, which is now in its second year, as well as the summer Jazz concert series that was begun by Dick Miller.

Mr. Weisman started out as a percussionist with the National Symphony Orchestra. He also performed early on with the Diplomats, a U.S. Air Force Band, which frequently entertained heads of state, celebrities and presidents. Before moving to Provincetown in 2002, Mr. Weisman lived in Washington D.C., where he performed regularly at major venues. He now drums and travels his way up and down the length of the Cape with his own musical group, the Bart Weisman Jazz Group, to perform multiple performances every month.

The klezmer concert at the Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is free and open to the public. PAAM is located at 460 Commercial Street.
